A VOLUNTEER group in Blackburn has opened its heart to help those in need keep warm in the cold conditions.

Rummage Rescuers has been giving away hats, scarves, coats and gloves to passers-by in the town centre.

Items were tied to railings in the grounds of Blackburn Cathedral across from the Railway Road store, while a rack of coats was accompanied by a sign offering them for free.

Rachel Rhodes, area manager for the group, said it was always looking to do what it can to help.

She said: “It’s absolutely freezing. It’s really, really cold at the moment and we just thought we’d do a bit to help out.

“It’s just about going back to basics, and doing little things we can to help people. It’s lovely to see people getting involved.

“It’s just about looking after each other. It’s gone down really well. But whatever time of year, we always try to do little things to help.”

Rummage Rescuers is made up from volunteers who work with local people and organisations to collect clothing, furniture and other important items to give to homeless people and the needy.

The organisation has two more community shops in Blackburn, in New Wellington Street and Town Hall Street, and a furniture warehouse.

The stores can get anything up to 15 deliveries a day of donations.

Miss Rhodes said that the group is doing well at the moment, but that it would welcome more people to get involved and help their cause.

She said: “We help so many people in so many different ways.

“We’re a non-profit organisation and we don’t get funding like other groups, but it’s just about doing what we can.

“People are so good to us with donations but there are always more people that need our help.

“And we’re always needing more volunteers, whether that be staff at the shop, or van drivers.” Anyone wishing to get involved by donating or volunteering to help the group should contact 01254 581478 or info@rummagerescuers.org.uk.
