A DRUNKEN man kicked a paramedic who was trying to help him after he was found collapsed in the street.

Blackburn magistrates heard Andrew Edward Dodds regularly drank three, three-litre bottles of strong cider a day and on this occasion had mixed that with medication.

Dodds, 29, of Adelaide Terrace, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Harun Gulab. He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with a six-month alcohol treatment requirement, fined £60 and ordered to pay £150 compensation.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said paramedics were called to a report of a man collapsed who people thought may have had a fit.

When the ambulance staff started speaking to Dodds they noticed his eyes were ‘pinpricked’ suggesting he had taken some kind of substance. He became abusive when they asked him to get in the ambulance but calmed down when they mentioned calling the police.

“They set off for the hospital and he suggested they roll the ambulance before announcing he was going to fight the paramedic who was in the back with him,” said Miss Allan.

“The defendant fell towards Mr Gulab who pushed him away. Dodds kicked out catching the paramedic on the knee.”

Richard Prew, defending, said his client had problems and was very remorseful.
