And when police approached the driver he said: “It’s a good job it was only a Corsa or you would never have caught me.”

Waqas Iftikhar Hussain, 25, of Revidge Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

He was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced after the magistrates ruled their powers were insufficient.

He will appear at the court on February 20.

Tracey Yates, prosecuting, said officers first saw the Corsa in Brownhill Road. “They tried to catch the vehicle but despite doing 90mph they were unable to make any ground,” said Mrs Yates.

“The car went through a red light and then mounted the pavement and crossed the verge as it turned into Whinney Lane, narrowly missing another vehicle.”

Mrs Yates said the car cut the corner as it turned into Lawrence Avenue and crossed the pavement. “It would have been dangerous had anyone been walking on the pavement,” she added.

Peter King, defending, said his client expected the magistrates to take the view the offence should go to Crown Court.
