DRIVERS have said changes to a major Blackburn road are still causing confusion after a two-car crash yesterday.

The complaints about the old Guide roundabout being replaced with traffic lights resurfaced after a crash yesterday morning close to the Willows pub.

The changes were made at the end of 2014 as part of a £1.4million project to ease congestion in Grane Road and Haslingden Road.

On the Lancashire Telegraph website, one resident said: “It was only a matter of time before this happened, people come off the motorway still doing 50mph in the left-hand lane and try to push their way in where the bottle neck is at The Willows.

“Why does Capita mark the roads like that? It’s the same at Ewood near McDonald’s.”

Drivers expressed their anger about the changes back in March after two crashes occurred in two days.

Both accidents involved two cars, one near the Willows pub and the other and the Blackamoor Road junction.

The incidents brought the area around the traffic lights to a standstill.

There were no injuries as a result of the crash yesterday but it did cause some congestion back to junction five of the M65 and Haslingden Road.

The lights were also put in place to improve access to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Another resident, under the name indian49, said: “Take your life in your hands if you wish to turn right onto School Lane from the motorway at these traffic lights.

“It’s a death trap.

“I find it safer to go to the roundabout past The Willows and back on myself then turn left onto School Lane.

“It only takes a few seconds longer and I am still alive after.”

In 2014, residents said that the plans would not resolve congestion problems and would in fact cause further headaches.

The Guide Village Action Group were active in campaigning against the changes.

Blackburn with Darwen Council also installed traffic lights at the M65 junction five roundabout on behalf of the Highways Agency. The council highways boss Phil Riley declined to comment.
