A 35-YEAR-OLD man who was caught at the wheel of his car with the engine running claimed he had no intention of driving and was just charging his phone so he could call for a lift.

Blackburn magistrates heard Ritchie William Rollo became abusive when police tried to arrest him on suspicion of drink driving and eventually had to be Parva sprayed.

Rollo, of Preston New Road, Blackburn, admitted failing to provide a breath specimen and obstructing a police officer. He was banned from driving for nine months and made subject to a community order with 40 days’ rehabilitation.

Kerry Grieve, prosecuting, said police were called to a report of an assault and found Rollo sitting in his car. When asked for his name he said he was “King Rollo”.

“He became agitated and said he wasn’t going anywhere,” said Mrs Grieve. Rollo made some sexual references and struggled violently as officers tried to put on handcuffs.

Gareth Price, defending, said when he read exactly what he had said and done Rollo was shocked and very disappointed in himself.

“He realises he should’ve gone through the breathalyser procedure and argued his case in court,” said Mr Price.
