ONE of the largest ever church gatherings in the north - centring on East Lancashire - has seen thousands come together to celebrate their faith.

Archbishop of York, the Most Rev John Sentamu, has toured Blackburn Diocese as part of the Crossroads Mission for 2016, with events from Ewood Park to Bowley Scout Camp.

And Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev Julian Henderson welcomed more than 20 fellow bishops to his patch for four days of mission and outreach work, a unique exercise for the Church of England.

Bishop of Burnley, the Rt Rev Phillip North and Bishop of Lancaster, the Rt Rev Geoff Pearson helped to host the huge gathering, which also saw Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Rev Libby Lane, who began her church life as curate at St James Blackburn, among the visiting clergy.

Bishop Julian said: "The number and range of events is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of every single person in parishes and schools who has got involved with the Crossroads Mission."

More than 4,000 youngsters gathered at the home of Blackburn Rovers, for a worship event dreamed up by the Rev Tim Horobin, vicar of St James Lower Darwen,

Rev Horobin, speaking later, said: "It has been the most amazing day. The children have been so excited to be worshipping together in such an exciting venue. It has been fantastic to see the support of so many parents and family members as well who came along to sit in the stands, not just to watch but to participate in all the singing and dancing as well."

Rovers director Mike Cheston said: "The vibrant colours and well-rehearsed singing made for a terrific spectacle, and it was great to see so many young primary school children enjoying themselves and having fun."

Another significant landmark was the Altham Angels Festival, which saw the Hyndburn village transformed by ethereal presences - in a similar fashion to the Pokemon Go craze.

Young people were urged to download an app which enabled them to find six 'augmented' angels, scattered around Altham, before pitting their characters against each other in a tournament later.

The Archbishop of York was joined by former TV Gladiator Warren 'Ace' Furman, at Bowley Scout Camp, near Great Harwood.

The charismatic churchman joined drummers Twelve24 and DJ This at the event, which was supported by East Lancashire Scouts.

A prayer walk was also held by Pendle Deanery and Clitheroe St James hosted a 'superheroes' service.
