BLACKBURN’S MP has called for urgent talks with directors of the town’s football club over a perceived ‘lack of investment’ and ‘disastrous start to the season’.

Kate Hollern said she has been inundated with Blackburn Rovers fans raising concerns over owner’s Venky’s running of the club and wants to talk to the India-based multi-millionaires directly about it.

A spokesman for Mrs Hollern said subject to the response she will look at other forms of action.

In a statement Mrs Hollern, who raised concerns about the running of the club when she was leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “The situation at Rovers is a great concern to all fans of the club and the people of Blackburn generally.

“The start of the season has seen three straight losses and the early indicators show that it’s going to be a long season with a possible relegation battle ahead.

“I have been inundated with emails from concerned fans about the way the club is being run at present. The club ownership don’t appear to be investing in the club to an adequate level and we’re yet to hear plans on how the club’s fortunes will be turned around in the short or long term.

“It seems like every year the club announces more losses, with the debt bill now totalling more than £100 million.

“I will be writing to Blackburn Rovers’ directors to raise my concerns and meeting with supporters to discuss the ongoing situation.

“Rovers is a great asset to our town, providing entertainment to thousands of fans each week, is a large employer and big match days bring customers to local businesses. A successful club is in our town’s interest.

“We all want to see Rovers, a club with such a rich history and such a large supporter base back in the Premier League where they belong. I’ll be sure to keep constituents updated and if you have concerns email me at kate.hollern.mp@parliament.uk.”

A Rovers spokesman said: “We have not received any request for a meeting as yet from Mrs Hollern and we are not in a position to comment until we do so.”

Rovers find themselves bottom of the Championship having lost all of their opening three games. They did progress in the first round of the EFL Trophy.
