SHOPPERS were evacuated from the Morrisons store in Blackburn after a light fitting fire.

At 12.10pm a crew from Blackburn and a crew from Accrington were called to the store in Railway Road after the light inside the entrance of the shop had caught fire.

The store was completely evacuated within two minutes.

Rob Birtwistle, watch manager at Blackburn Fire said the fire was put out on arrival by members of staff using four carbon dioxide fire extinguishers.

He said: "The shop staff did an amazing job with the evacuation and everyone was outside within two minutes.

"We made sure the fire was fully out and the light safe before allowing shoppers back in.

"Everyone behaved calmly and appropriately considering it was a very busy store."

A Morrisons spokesman said: "The fire service was called immediately once the smoke was seen.

"We followed our emergency procedures correctly and the store was evacuated smoothly.

"The store is now open for trading."
