ANTI-VIOLENCE campaigners Pat and David Rogers have been awarded honorary fellowships for their tireless efforts to make East Lancashire’s night time economies safer in memory of their son Adam.

The founders of the ground-breaking Every Action Has Consequences initiative were praised for their efforts in conflict resolution since popular Adam lost his life in a single-punch attack in Blackburn. His alma mater, the University of Cumbria, bestowed the honours.

The Padiham FC Ladies coach and sports performance graduate at Cumbria was working as a fitness instructor at the time of death in July 2009.

Tim Barry, one of Adam’s former lecturers, officially responded on behalf of the Carlisle-based university after Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Strike.

David said: “We are pleased, not just for ourselves but for the recognition this honour brings to Every Action Has Consequences and all those who support us in our work.

"It means a lot to us to be associated in this way with the University of Cumbria, not only because Cumbria has been an important part of our lives as a special family destination for many walking holidays, but also because Adam and his younger brother Jamie both studied for their degrees there.”

The Rogers, of Blackburn, join Lord Melvyn Bragg, Sir Chris Bonington, and Maddy Prior as fellows of the university.

The couple received a standing ovation at the Carlisle Cathedral ceremony.

Prof Strike said: “Although still in shock his parents, Pat and David, knew instinctively they had to find something positive to help find a way to cope.

"They channelled their anger and grief into setting up the charity Every Action Has Consequences with the aim of working with young people to challenge attitudes to violence and binge drinking.”
