TWO road workers were injured after being struck by a car in Blackburn town centre.

The men were working on the highway improvements at Eanam, close to Higher Barn Street, when they were hit by a car at around 11.25am.

There was a swift response from emergency services and by noon there were four police vehicles, two ambulances and three paramedic cars at the scene.

The two injured men were treated close to a traffic island in the centre of the road while police officers assisted traffic flow in both directions.

The air ambulance also landed at the nearby Audley Sport Centre but police said the two men's injuries were not as serious as first thought so the helicopter was not used.

The men, believed to be in their 30s, were treated for various injuries.

Israr Aslam, 16, had been helping out at family firm Fabric Outlet, when the incident happened.

He said: "I heard a bang and a lot of noise so I came outside the shop, one of the men had got up and was screaming at the top of his voice.

"There was blood coming from his head and it was on his face clothes and arms.

"People had stopped and were helping them and contacting ambulances and police.

"The man on the phone didn't know the exact address so I was able to tell them exactly where the accident was.

"The police and paramedics came here very quickly, a couple of minutes at most and started to treat the men.

"Everyone who stopped and was passing tried to help."

Police took CCTV from Fabric Outlet and other nearby businesses as they began investigations into the circumstances of the accident.

Police said both the men had been transferred to Royal Preston Hospital by road.

They added that their injuries were not though to be life-threatening.

A police spokesman, said: “At 11.25 there was a report that a car had collided with two pedestrians on Eanam at the junction with Higher Barn street.

“Two pedestrians were injured – two males in their 30s.”
