He also threw a brick at a passing car which was being driven by a pregnant woman.

Collins, of Delph Close, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to affray. He was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months, ordered to complete 40 days’ rehabilitation activity requirement and 40 hours’ unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay a total of £900 compensation to people whose cars were damaged.

Passing sentence the chairman said innocent people had been put in fear, including a pregnant woman. “People were put in fear of their own and their children’s lives,” said the chairman.

Alex Mann, prosecuting, said CCTV showed Collins leaving his house on several occasions during the episode which took place around 6pm. Witnesses told how he damaged cars by throwing things at them and threatened people who came out to investigate. When the pregnant woman got out of her vehicle he shouted at her to get back in.

“He was very threatening and later told police she was terrified,” said Mrs Mann.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Collins was extremely remorseful for what happened.

“He accepts he has caused unnecessary stress and fear for a number of people after getting himself into a drunken state,” said Mr Taylor. “A neighbour who was talking to his wife and received some attention from him has written to the court and said she wouldn’t feel intimidated by his return to the street. She doesn’t see him as a threat but obviously on this occasion his behaviour has fallen below the required standard.”
