A BUSINESSMAN who arranged for a giant washing machine to be put outside his shop has been ordered to move it by the council.

Liaqat Ali, who runs the Nisa store in Deardengate, Haslingden, agreed for the ‘Revolution Launderette’ to be placed on his land just yards from the entrance to his store on May 24.

Within days of the £40,000 machine being dropped off on Wednesday evening more than 370 residents had signed a petition calling for it to be removed.

Rossendale Council’s Planning Enforcement Team have now served notice on Mr Ali to remove the huge launderette from the front of the building.

He has until August 11 to shift it.

The action comes after an investigation by officials.

Cllr Christine Lamb, portfolio holder for Planning, said:“Our planning enforcement officers have worked really quickly on this issue which had sparked a lot of public interest and debate.

"It’s pleasing to be able to sort the issue quickly for all those who were concerned.”

Mr Ali, who has owned the shop for several years, said: "Several people have come and used it and said it was great.

"I did this for local a people and I have not made a penny from it.

"However if some people are not happy, it's no skin off my nose.

"As people do not seem to want it, I am happy to see it moved as soon as feasible.”

Chris Hood, co-owner with Andrea Britland of the next door Dearden Tea Rooms, said: “Mr Ali just had an idea to improve the area but it was not the right one.

"It was the wrong thing in the wrong place.

"I am pleased its going to be moved."

No-one from the operator, KIS Wash Laundry Solutions, was available for comment.

The ‘Revolution Launderettes’ are fitted with a multi-touch screen, can provide up to an 18kg wash and dry for £10 as well as tackle smaller washes.
