A SCHOOL is trying to re-unite artwork created in the 1960s with former pupils after the pictures were ‘rediscovered’.

Around 40 paintings, complete with names and addresses, were uncovered in the attic of a former teacher who died this summer.

Longshaw Junior School in Blackburn has been gifted the works by George Aspden’s niece and a campaign has now started to seek out past students who have not seen the pieces for around 50 years.

Deputy head teacher Jonathan Berry said: “It’s amazing that they have been found but also that they are in such good condition.

“To have them with names and addresses on the back is also remarkable and I hope that we are able to get in contact with those who created them in the first place.

“It’s a really exciting find and the current children here are really interested in it.”

It is believed that Mr Aspden, who taught at the school from 1964 to 1968, entered the works into a competition but it is unknown why they were not returned to the school or their owners at the time.

Talks have also been opened between the family and Blackburn Museum for a selection to be put on display for a period next year although no formal agreement has yet been reached.

Also uncovered were original scripts from performances at the school of Aladdin and Cinderella.

Mr Aspden, who primarily created decorative masks, also penned a number of books including One Piece of Card before he passed away earlier this year aged 88.

His niece Jenifer Keen said: “We are very pleased to have given these items to the school and I hope that the people who actually made them can be reunited with them.

“There are some fabulous pieces in the collection and it is amazing that there is so many.

“They have been mounted on card and are in very good condition.

“They will probably not have seen the light of day for 50 years so it’s great that we found them now.

“We are hoping that the people who made them are now grandparents to children who now attend the school.”
