A PRIMARY school is publicly shaming parents who park dangerously when dropping off and collecting their children.

Wensley Fold CE Academy is publishing the registration numbers of cars blocking the entrance to residents’ drives in its newsletter.

The head of the Manor Road, Blackburn has also reported that irresponsible drivers have tailgated staff entering through its electric gates, causing near misses with children.

Youngsters with mobility issues use the lane beyond the gate and staff are fearful that unless motorists behave more responsibly there may be a serious incident.

One nearby resident said she had resorted to parking across the front of her drive to prevent it being blocked and another said his vehicle had been damaged during school dropping off and picking up times.

Head teacher Gaynor Stubbs said: “Our neighbours have been very patient but are now getting to the end of their tether.

“The police have been informed and it will only be a matter of time before they will be issuing fines to those who are illegally parking.

“Meanwhile they have asked us to release the car registration numbers of those who have parked illegally.”

Mrs Stubbs added: “Please can we ask that parents do not follow staff members onto the school drive in cars.”

One nearby resident said: “We have to put our car across our drive because in the past my husband has been late for medical appointments because he has been blocked in.

“We have even had people park on our drive.

“When we have asked them what they are doing they have said ‘I’m just leaving it here for five minutes’. A lot of people come and park in the road.

“It goes on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. It’s completely unacceptable.

“I’m glad to see the school and the police are doing something about it.”

Another resident said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous, just the way they abandon their cars.

“In a morning they come here between 8 and 9am blasting their horns.

“I have been here for 18 months and I’ve got scratches all over my car, which I’m going to have to pay to fix.

“I’m glad the school is taking action and I hope the police will follow up on the information they receive.”

Resident Ali Ahmed said: “I have a driveway and it gets blocked.

“But I am a father and I understand that parents need to pick up and drop off their kids.

“It’s not like they’re parking their cars here and going off shopping.

“The council needs to build a car park.”

The school is currently in the process of doubling its intake and has 360 pupils on its roll.

Deputy head of the school Judith Draper said: “We are trying to be proactive about the problems and we understand how frustrated our neighbours are.

“Most of our children live nearby and the ideal solution would be for them to walk to school.

“However, we understand that many parents work and have to drop off their children, but there is just no-where to park.

“We have walk to school weeks and the problems dies away - but only for those five days.

“Parking is an issue on Manor Road even outside the peak times but obviously picking up and dropping off times it’s much worse.

“We are also considering putting up yellow A-boards at the side of the road which say ‘parking here can seriously endanger an child’.”

Police said they were aware of the issues on Manor Road.

Neighbourhood officer for Wensley Fold, PC Ahmed Desai said: “Issues have been raised regarding vehicles being inappropriately parked.

“We do regularly patrol the area and we are working with local residents to identify and educate the offending drivers.”
