One pensioner in the area claims recycling bins haven’t been emptied for a month because they are too full.

Sylvia Ingham said: “I’ve been walking the length and breadth of Audley Lane, going up and down collecting up all the mess.

“I’ve been putting it in my recycling bin and they haven’t emptied it because it’s been too full.

“I’ve contacted the council numerous times over the past few months and it seems nothing is being done.”

Residents say local takeaways are responsible for the mess as they claim their branded wrappings are littering the streets.

Bottles, takeaway cartons and leftover food have been left in the street, residents claim.

Robert Maguire said: “The council in this borough are taking no notice.

“People are going to the takeaways and then throwing the rubbish out.

“They should be prosecuted.

“I’ve seen rats a few times.”

But Audley councillor and Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhood and Customer Services Yusuf Jan-Virmani stresses the council is doing its best to tackle the problem.

“We don’t know who is doing it but we are trying to monitor it,” said Cllr Jan-Virmani.

“We are urging takeaway owners to take their rubbish to the tip .

“It is free to take it there. We are working with the shops to make sure they put their rubbish in the tip.

“And we are also urging residents to tell us when they see people littering. They can give us car registration numbers and we will try to find out what is happening.”
