IN THE world of “Golden Oldies” it’s inevitable that some are more “golden and oldie” than others.

So it is with Go On Tour, a Blackburn-based theatre group, who are celebrating the 90th birthday of their oldest performer.

Singer Rene Booth has reached her tenth decade and has no intention of withdrawing from the limelight.

Rene, who lives in sheltered accommodation in Blackburn, joined the GOs (Golden Oldies) in November 2010 and loves to get involved.

With the warmest of personalities, she specialises in a wide range of classic ballads and standards such as Summertime, True Love and Getting to Know You.

She said: “Getting out and about with these people has given me a new lease of life.

“Every show is a new adventure, I love it and I will keep singing for others as long as I can.

“I don’t feel 90 years old, though it is extra special as my son Stephen celebrates his 60th at the same time.”

To celebrate her landmark birthday Rene’s family whisked her off for a weekend in Blackpool – her favourite destination – and she has been enjoying several meals out. The GOs incorporated their own celebrations with Rene, complete with birthday cake, into their recent AGM at the Empire.

GO On Tour director Mandy Stableford paid tribute, saying: “Rene is fantastic for her age, she’s an inspiration to us all.”

The GOs operate from Blackburn’s Thwaites Empire Theatre in Blackburn.

The enthusiastic group, mostly pensioners, perform up to an incredible 60 shows a year, touring the North West, entertaining with costumed and choreographed song, dance and humour.

They perform for special events, birthday and Christmas parties, WI and church groups, charities and much more.
