MORE than 1,500 children in Blackburn with Darwen signed up for the annual library reading challenge this summer, a seven per cent increase on last year.

Youngsters aged four to 12 were invited to meet a cast of colourful creatures in the 'Mythical Maze'', this year's theme.

The annual event run by the Reading Agency aims to keep children reading throughout the summer.

It was run at all the borough's five main libraries, Children were asked to read six books of their choice and join the challenge.

They received a starter pack, including a labyrinth poster, to record their reading as they go.

At each stage, children met an exciting mythical character and collected a sticker.

Blackburn with Darwen borough leisure boss Damian Talbot said: "This year's statistics who an increase in both registrations and completions.

"1,579 children enrolled on the scheme during the summer holidays.

"This was an increase of seven per cent opn the previous year's figures.

"Completions rose by four per cent..

"I am absolutely delighted at the figures.

"It's great to see the numbers going up.

"The initiative is a fun way to help children keep their reading and literacy skills sharp during the long summer break."
