The group went on to launch fireworks at local councillors, marshals and police who were already in the area due to anti-social behaviour experienced in previous years.

A firework landed on a van belonging to a local resident, which caused extensive damage to the vehicle.

The area was contained by officers and two arrests were made.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and possession of a firework whilst being under 18.

Both were bailed pending further enquiries.

A number of people later moved on to the Robinson Street area of Little Harwood and discharged fireworks again.

Officers attended and the group was eventually dispersed.

The area was cleared and returned back to normal at around midnight.

Supt Julian Platt from Blackburn Police said: “The behaviour of these men was not only highly irresponsible but extremely dangerous and I am thankful that no one was seriously injured.

“Our officers on patrol in the Blackburn area spoke with a number of groups during the evening and did seize a large amount of fireworks.

“I would like to reassure the local community that this dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated and we are trying to identify those responsible. We will continue to work closely with partners, including the Fire Service, Trading Standards and youth services as we did in the lead up to Bonfire Night, to try and prevent this type of situation from happening again.

“I am determined to find the people involved and we are currently examining CCTV to try and identify those responsible.

“I would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident or if anyone saw people distributing fireworks from the back of cars to contact us. Similarly, if anyone has any camera footage or photographs of the disorder, please get in contact.”
