YOUNGSTERS were given a taste of what it would have been like to serve in the forces during the First World War.

An ‘immersive space’ at St Wilfrid’s CofE Academy in Blackburn was transformed into the trenches for the special event marking the centenary of the Great War.

Year five pupils from six primaries were sent back in time and got to experience a day in the life of a WW1 British soldier.

The students were given basic training by Sgt Major, before eating a realistic trenches lunch of ‘bully beef’ and bread.

They also got to hold 100-year-old artefacts from the trenches and watch year 12 and 13 students perform monologues of real-life transcripts.
