A TEAM of councillors will walk across Morecambe Bay this weekend to raise funds for Blackburn foodbank.

Led by Coun Phil Riley, the five Labour councillors and a team of friends and supporters will set off from Hest Bank on Saturday to walk the nine miles.

Coun Riley, who represents Roe Lee, will be joined by fellow Roe Lee councillor Sylvia Liddle, Corporation Park councillor Arshid Mahmood, Little Harwood councillor Naushad Surve, and newly-elected councillor for Meadowhead, Julie Gunn.

They will join around 100 people doing the walk for the food bank.

Coun Riley said: “Demands on the foodbank are, if anything, increasing, and it’s a complicated process keeping stocks the foodbank needs to keep feeding the people who are turning up.

“We’re expecting the demand to go up. There is a lot of concern about Universal Credit, and what that will do to people.”

Coun Riley said the foodbank was also preparing for an increase in demand during the school holidays, when children miss their daily free school meal.
