SPORTS stars will visit high school students in Blackburn.

The England Wales Cricket group is to visit Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School as part of a tour promoting girls’ participation in cricket.

England women’s cricket captain, Charlotte Edwards MBE, will be at QEGS tomorrow, along with England colleague Danielle Hazel.

The cricketers will deliver some indoor sessions to year seven girls to give them a taster of the sport.

Two million children play cricket thanks to the Chance to Shine schools' cricket campaign.

Paul Oliver at QEGS said: “The campaign is particularly focused on Lancashire as the country's traditional summer sport was in rapid decline and in real danger of dying out in many schools.

“Less than 10 per cent of state schools played any form of meaningful cricket. Children were just not getting the chance to play cricket at school and urgent action was needed, before it was too late.

“QEGS has a long tradition of producing professional cricketers. Seven have become professional players including Michael and David Brown, Duncan Catterall, Kevin Hayes and the most recent, Alex Davies, is now playing for Lancashire.

“As the number of girls in the school continues to rise, now may be the time for them to make an impression with bat and ball.”
