Blackburn dad, 26, dies from gunshot wound in Pakistan
8:53am Thursday 22nd November 2012 in Blackburn
By Vanessa Cornall, Crime reporter
A FATHER-of-one from Blackburn has died after suffering a gun-shot wound while staying in Pakistan.
Khurum Azam, 26, was found dead at home in Islamabad by his uncle.
An inquest opened by East Lancashire coroner Michael Singleton heard the married new father had a wound to the side of the head.
A post-mortem examination has been carried out and established there were no suspicious circ-umstances surrounding his death.
After Mr Azam, 26, of The Coppice, in the Beardwood area, was discovered, an investigation was launched by Islamabad police. They contacted the British Consulate who, in turn, alerted Lancashire Constabulary who helped the family organise the repatriation of Mr Azam’s body.
Mr Azam’s father, Mohammed, accompanied his body as it was repat-riated to Britain on November 15.
A statement from his family, including his wife and eight-month-old son, said: “Khurum Azam very sadly passed away in Pakistan on Monday, November 12. He lived for the most part of his life in Blackburn.
“His body was flown back to the UK, by his father for him to be buried in Blackburn as his grandparents, aunts, and uncles all reside here. His wife and son of eight months also live here.
“The family wish to express their warm and heartfelt thanks to Blackburn Hospital, Lancashire police and all the community for their genuine, and welcome, support in this trying time of their loss.
“Thousands of mourners paid their respects and offered condolences to the family at Masjide-Raza, and at Khurum’s funeral at Pleasington Cemetery, on Saturday, November 17.”
The Lancashire Telegraph understands Mr Azam is thought to have taken his own life, although the family dispute this.
Lancashire Police said: “Following the death, Mr Azam’s body was repatriated to the UK and Coroner Michael Singleton arranged for a post-mortem examination which has determined that the death is not of a suspicious nature.”
