Blackburn man with knife and bat created 'siege'

A MAN wielding a baseball bat and a kitchen knife created a ‘siege’ after threatening police who went to his address.
Blackburn magistrates heard Brendon Martin Travers barricaded himself in the front room of the house and, when officers tried to push their way in, he lashed out with the bat.
The court heard that Travers said: “The first one in here is going to get it.”
Travers, 43, of Accrington Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to two charges of assaulting police officers.
He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said the assault charges were for putting the police officers in fear of violence.
She said the officers had to withdraw from the door after Travers lunged forward, with the bat and knife in his hands.
Miss Allan said: “He said he was going to kill himself.
“At one point he appeared with the point of the knife pressed into his own throat.”
Officers were in a stand-off as they negotiated with Travers, who eventually put down his weapons, and was arrested. Graeme Parkinson, defending, said his client was a man who needed help.
