New drive to reduce dog fouling in Blackburn

A NEW scheme has been set up to promote responsible dog ownership across the Roe Lee area of Blackburn.

Three community groups from Roe Lee have been trained, and have set up the scheme called Your Community Your Call ‘dog champions’.

The committee members, from the Friends of Blackburn Old Cemetery, the Friends of Roe Lee Park, and Pemberton Street Residents’ Association, will promote responsible dog ownership across the area, particularly focusing on reducing dog fouling.

Coun David Pearson said: “Dog mess is one of those things that we know local people absolutely hate.

“It is not too much of a problem in Roe Lee park, but it is in some of the streets and fields.

“A minority of people who don’t pick up after their dogs are giving the responsible dog owners a bad name.

“We have some great ideas to improve the cleanliness of our streets and footpaths, and we can’t wait to get started.”

Majority of parks in the UK are contaminated with toxocorra eggs directly related to dogs fouling which can lead to eye disorders and blindness particularly in children. Irresponsible dog owners are all of social classes and ages and the majority do not believe they would ever be caught. If every dog owner cleared up after their dog, related diseases would completely be eradicated and the need for the public to report dog owners of such incident, notably early morning dog walkers.

Dog faeces is bad enough, but what I find more disgusting is the plastic bags cast full of filth cast to one side or even worse dangling from the bushes at the end of footpaths often in close proximity to bins. The only way to ensure compliance to the law is to fine the offenders the maximum that is available to the court.

I am an ex dog owner ,when we took him out we always picked the mess up and often had to carry it home as there were hardly any bins,its disgusting when you see bags of dog mess on the paths and in the trees,perhaps the owners dont want to have to carry it round and put in their bin at home,surely if theres bags of dog mess dumped everywhere that tells us that people are willing to pick it up but dont want to take it with them if there were more bins im sure most people would use them,It used to be terrible going for a walk along the canals because there were bags dumped in all the trees we had to carry the mess all the way along the canal and bring it home,its no good moaning about people dumping it when in most cases theres no bins to put it in
