Pledge on sexual grooming is welcomed by Blackburn MP Jack Straw
9:00pm Thursday 4th October 2012 in News
SHADOW Home Secretary Yvette Cooper’s pledge of action on sexual grooming of youngsters has been welcomed by Jack Straw and Lord Tony Greaves.
Yesterday she called for a renewed focus in the wake of the Rochdale scandal.
Already the specialist Engage and Freedom teams tackle the issue across East Lancashire, highlighted a decade ago in the Telegraph’s Keep Them Safe campaign.
Ms Cooper told the Labour Party Conference, gathered in Manchester: “I feel very strongly that more action is needed fast.
“We need a new Domestic and Sexual Violence Board starting with rapid action to protect vulnerable children and young people.”
Blackburn MP Mr Straw said: “This is based on the Youth Justice Board I established which has been effective in focusing effort.
“This is an important issue which Blackburn council, the Telegraph and Lancashire police were early to act upon.”
Liberal Democrat Lord Greaves, from Pendle, said: “This is a good idea but we need to see the detail.”

If I accidentally leave my front door unlocked, there may be some blame on me if I am burgled. But the main responsibility lies with the thief. Decent people would not steal even if they saw my door unlocked.

As the current Jimmy Saville case illustrates (yet again), 25 years ago children and young people who might have complained about abuse and grooming would have been ignored or not believed.
There has been a shift to taking seriously complaints by children and young people, which is why more cases now come to light. Including, sadly, more and more cases from 20-30 years ago because cases were not taken up at the time.

I have no idea what "CPB'" grooming is but you need look no further than the current awareness of the situation of the time than the Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter et al theme of today's papers to see that what you refer to did indeed occur as much 25 years ago.
To repeat, we do not live in more dangerous times (and not 'much unsafer times' as you suggest) than 100, 50 or 25 years ago at all.

And Im pretty sure this is the same jack straw who passed the law making it illegal for children to speak out against care workers etc even when feel that they are mistreated, and the same guy keeping family courts behind closed doors where even illegal actions of social workers and judges are protected by threats and gagging orders...
I have also heard his own children were in foster care?
What on earth does he know about protecting children...
