ACCRINGTON Stanley’s manager is backing a campaign to get the whole town behind the promotion-chasing club.
Manager Paul Cook said the club had seen a drop in attendance since the days he played for the side under ex-manager John Coleman, and believes the support of the town could play a vital role in the team’s future success.
A new film on YouTube shows supporters of the club spreading the word in Accrington town centre, together with a videoed interview with Mr Cook.
Young fans are featured in the video, handing out promotional items to crowds in the market hall, and to shoppers on Broadway.
It is not the first time the club has taken its message to the streets. Chief executive Rob Heys and club chairman Ilyas Khan last year hit city centres of London, Liverpool, and Manchester to drum up support as part of a shares scheme.
But the club says it is home-grown support it most needs to capitalise on its recent success, reaching fourth in the League Two table.
Mr Cook said: “For some reason, the football has maintained its standard, but the crowds have dropped away.
“Hopefully, by working together with the community, the board, and the chairman, we can start bringing more people to the ground that will enable us to push on further.”
Stanley fans spent the afternoon drumming up support in the town centre, handing out fixture posters to shops and local businesses, and promoting the home games taking place this month.
Mr Cook said: “I think it’s important the town backs the club. Sometimes you don’t realise what you’ve got until you’ve lost it and we’d hate to think that one day we’d go back to the Conference.
“It’s crucial we maintain the stability we have and look to get into Division One, but without the fans’ support we certainly can’t look forward like this.”
Chief executive Mr Heys said: “We’re doing so well. It’s good football and it’s also a brilliant day out for the family. We’ve won The Football League Family Excellence Award for four years going because we have a lot to offer."
