Haslingden students plan to send school badge into space

AMBITIOUS students at a Valley sixth form are planning to shoot the school’s badge 100,000ft into the stratosphere.
The science club at Haslingden High School is hoping to send a weather balloon to the edge of space to photograph the school’s logo ‘on top of the world’.
They have been inspired following the recent appointment of media studies teacher Ben Farnworth as summer head at an American space school.
Civil Aviation Authority clearance is needed before the balloon can be launched, and it is hoped the flight can be made on a calm, non-windy day, in March, so it falls on land, and not in the sea.
Head of chemistry Paul Bland said: “The balloon will only be in the air for a couple of hours before it bursts.
“Once it falls to earth we are planning to use the onboard GPS system to retrieve it from wherever it lands in the country.”
As well as the GPS system, the balloon will also be fitted with a Raspberry Pi, a credit-card sized personal computer.
