Rossendale councillors reject minimum booze pricing

COUNCILLORS in Rossendale have voted against backing a minimum price for alcohol.

The issue is being debated nationwide, with a structure of 50p per unit being proposed.

That proposal was passed by Members of the Scottish Parliament earlier this year, but they are facing legal action from whisky manufacturers.

Legal challenges mean it is unlikely that England and Wales will attempt to follow suit. At a full council meeting, a majority of Rossendale representatives voted against supporting 50p per unit proposals.

Among the concerns raised were the penalising of sensible drinkers, and a lack of actual strategy in place to combat the issue.

people need to work out that unless your drinking the cheapest swill this wouldn't effect them.

every time this gets talked about people cry out about how pubs will be finished off, when actually this would help them as it would target supermarkets selling booze at cost just to get people in the door.

Something really does need doing to stop our supermarkets creating a health time bomb, that we will all have to pay for. The problem I believe is not Public houses, most are shut and the ones left open are charging well above any suggested minimum price. Supermarkets are trying to kill off all the competion with their aggressive pricing, like they have with other independents like milk men, newsagents and butchers.

Either a minimum price for off sales should be set or perhaps a limit on the amount of floor space supermarkets can use for alcohol sales should be made.
