Positive feedback on Darwen's Jubilee mural

The Jubilee mural The Jubilee mural

BOSSES at Crown Paints have submitted a retrospective planning application for the huge mural on the side of a house in Blackburn Road, Darwen.

The Union flag, painted on the side of the property facing Hollins Road near the entrance to the Crown Paints site, was unveiled in May as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The application, submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council by Crown’s support manager Vernon Kinrade, states that ‘although opinion was not originally sought, feedback from the local community has been very positive’.

At the time of unveiling Mr Kinrade said: “We are very proud about being a royally-appointed company.

“The mural is our way of saying happy Jubilee.”

The flag was painted with the company’s most popular coloured paints.

I concur Hovis 1945, it is one of the nicer things for us born and BREAD in Darwen to look at.

It is certainly a great way to advertise and far better than any bill board. Very well done.

(former councillor!) It really does brighten up what is becoming an unsightly area of Darwen - but it cannot be described as a Union flag given the revisions to the genuine colour ways.
We could do with more initiatives like this to brighten up other areas of the town - murals of the tower, india mill chimney, Darwen buses etc etc. People visit Blackpool for the lights - maybe they might visit the home town of Crown Paints to view the murals

Totally agree with you.... there are various sites that spring to mind.... rear of tsb, gable end of railway road, gable end of borough road (luigi tiles i think) unfortunately i don't think they would fit in with the heritage status.

I remember a couple of other murals, done by students from the old Blackburn Tech, if my memory serves me well. One was of a Blackburn tram and was on a building in Blackburn at Larkhill, at the top end of Penny Street, which disappeared when the building was demolished to make way for Barbara Castle Way, and the other one was on the gable end next to the old steam tram terminus at Whitehall in Darwen. That was of a Darwen tram but got painted over several years ago. We should have more murals on gable ends etc as they do brighten the place up!
