Late-night Rossendale buses keep on running

Bus services have been safeguarded for another year Bus services have been safeguarded for another year

LATE-night buses between Bacup, Rawtenstall and Haslingden have been safeguarded for another year, county councillors are to confirm.

Around £9,640 will be spent by Lancashire’s public transport unit on ensuring the 464 bus runs after 9.30pm.

Earlier this year a campaign was launched to save several morning and evening services and the county council stepped in to subsidise the 2140 and 2240 buses until October 27.

Now county council leader Coun Geoff Driver is set to approve a new cash injection, pending a countywide review of supported routes.

Environment director Jo Turton said in a report that an analysis of journey patterns showed that around 15,000 trips were made on the two services each year.

“This equates to an average of 288 weekly passenger trips being made, broken down to around 48 passenger trips per day, equating to approximately 24 per journey,” she added. This is more cost-effective than earlier predictions for the 464 route. The problem previously had been that the amount of subsidy required was considered too high.

Rossendale Bus decided last April that it would continue to operate two other late-night services, the 2123 from Rawtenstall to Bacup and the 2138 between Bacup and Haslingden.

County Coun Tony Winder said: “We know that many residents rely on the 464 and, in particular, shift workers use these evening services to get to and from work. I am delighted we have been able to provide the funding for another 12 months."

yet again rbc looking for hand outs for the buses (which they own) rather than organizing them properly.

and yeah, im guessing rochdale to bacup doesnt matter anymore to lancashoure county council, something we knew already.

Yet again I suggest the Burnley bus be extended through Whitworth to Rochdale not through to Rawtenstall which has enough busses. I would have thought it would be right to connect ALL parts of Lancashire together.

"Rossendale bus decided to continue the service"....lets face facts, what Rossendale bus ACTUALLY decided to do was fleece the council tax payers outof more money and htreaten to remove the service which WE pay for if they didnt get their own way!!!

Burnley busses are run by Transdev who now operate a cheaper more reliable burnley to bury service, the X8.
transdev are far superior to Rossendale bus in price, reliability and comfort!!!

transdev have said they will stop the 8 unless they get a subsidy, sort of ruins your argument

yeah just seen the article about the request for subsudy....surely they are as entitled to the same subsidy as Rossendale Bus??

Personally i would prefer to lose the 464 than the X8 and 8, transdev are much better...but we will just have to wait and see

a company the size of transdev won't run the 8 and x8 for 10k

agreed GAC, and it would be a shame to lose the service, but the council tax payers are paying for it whether they use it or not,

My point is that the only people who SHOULD be paying for the servide are those who use it, there is no other business which is funded by council tax payers.

the problem with the service is the people who do use it, a good percentage are oap's who get free bus passes, and thanks to changes that happend a few years ago with how much money transport companys get from the passes its hit some routes hard.

iv suggested a couple of times now they should change the day time buses from every 10 to every 15 mins to save a few runs but it seems the management at rossendale buses would rather run crying to LCC for a hand out much like RBC keeps doing rather than getting there act together.

Agreed again, also reduce the size of the busses used at night time service, this would reduce costs too, this suggestion has also been made to them by their own drivers, but you are quite right, why improve the service or efficiency of the company when they are paid for by the council....not only LCC but RBC fund the company...outragous, they should be made to fund themselves like every other company
