Praise for the rise in training

A RISE in the number of apprenticeships has been welcomed by Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson.

He praised the coalition Government after it confirmed a 63 per cent hike in people taking up training during the past year.

Around 25,000 people will get the chance to gain degree-level skills through higher apprenticeships.

Mr Stephenson said: “More people are starting an apprenticeship than ever before, and we finally have a Careers Service that can meet the needs of young people and adults alike.

“I urge ministers to do even more and I hope young people and adults in Pendle take advantage of the fantastic opportunities to gain new skills which are now available to them.”

In 2009, the Labour government passed the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act. This provided for the creation of a National Apprenticeship Service, which was given the task of convincing employers to offer increased numbers of places. The same Act provided for an entitlement to an apprenticeship for every school-leaver who was appropriately qualified (defined as five or more GCSE passes at any grade). The Education Act introduced to Parliament by the coalition government in January 2011 removes this entitlement.
