A CHARITY cyclist from Clitheroe has won a prestigious volunteer award after 10 years of fundraising.

‘Local legend’ Bill Honeywell, an estate agent from West Bradford, has raised more than £50,000 for cancer charities since beating testicular and bowel cancer in 1999.

He was also touched by losing a close friend to cancer four years ago.

Among sponsored events, Bill cycled 4,400 miles around the British coast last year, and climbed all 214 of Wainwright’s Lake District fells in 2009.

He received his award from Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Community Voluntary Support (CVS) after being nominated by the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, which provides care for cancer patients in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Bill said: “My experience with cancer has been a driving factor in my fundraising efforts and has helped motivate me when the challenges were tough.

“Winning this award is a real honour for me and will only spur me on to do more.

“I’d like to thank Rosemere Cancer Foundation for nominating me for the award and for all the good work they do in the region.”

Bill’s award was presented at the Leapfrog Showcase, an annual event organised by the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley CVS to celebrate the work of groups and organisations in the local voluntary sector.

Bill was honoured with one of the highest accolades, outstanding volunteer.

Dan Hill, area fundraising co-ordinator for East Lancashire at the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, said: “Bill is a local legend and we cannot thank him enough for his fundraising efforts over the last few years.

“We were delighted to nominate him and were so pleased to hear that he’d been successful.

“It could not have been given to a more worthy winner.”
