Driver in critical condition following Accrington bypass smash

THE driver of a Mercedes involved in a fatal collision on the A56 Accrington bypass on Tuesday morning was in a critical condition in an induced coma this morning.

The 33-year-old was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with serious leg injuries after the crash, which killed his sister, 35, and left his 18-month-old niece with minor injuries.

Police said an investigation was still ongoing into the cause of the accident.

The silver Mercedes Coupe was travelling towards Rising Bridge when it lost control and veered across to the opposite carriageway.

It collided with a red Mini Cooper, a Mercedes Sprinter van and a Ford Transit van, all of which were heading towards Junction Eight of the M65.
