Burnley bogus collectors warning is issued

RESIDENTS are being urged to be on their guard against bogus charity collectors after a resident was targeted in Burnley.

Around 7.50pm on Tuesday, September 18, a resident was targeted by a man claiming to be collecting for his brother who had cerebral palsy.

The resident refused to hand over any money and the man left empty handed Residents are being advised to make sure the collectors have the correct paperwork, which includes accredited details of the charity.

The warning comes after a series of incidents in the last two months, where residents from across Burnley were targeted by a man claiming to be collecting for charity.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of fraud and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

DI Jes Holland said: “Whilst the majority of collectors are legitimate, we want to remind people to check the authenticity of anyone claiming to be working on behalf of a charity.

“If in doubt, people should politely decline and contact the police.”
