Burnley butcher makes ‘world hottest sausages’

A BURNLEY butcher is hoping his sausages go down with a bang – after making what could be the hottest bangers in the world.

Stephen Berkins has created a pork sausage made from a chilli extract called 'Killer' which are literally too hot to handle.

And boffins at Warwick University are now testing the banger to find out if it is the hottest in the world.

Stephen, who has run his Rosegrove Lane shop for 12 years, said the chillis were so hot, he donned gloves while making them.

He said: “My eyes were streaming and I was coughing like mad. They were so hot they could burn your skin.”

He also added naga flakes for an added kick. Stephen supplied 30 of his hot bangers for a Man vs Food challenge at the national chilli festival in Brighton.

He said: “The heat of a chilli is measured on the scoville scale. Normal chillis are between 40 and 100,000, but my sausages are 12million scovilles of pain. I only used a thimble full of the chilli but it’s off the scale.

“I have another extract called Death, that is six million on the scale.

“They must be absolutely insane at the challenge. They just keep eating chilli things until the last man standing. I ate a quarter of an inch and that was enough for me.”

Stephen said he will find out this week if his sausages are world record breakers.

“I sent them to Warwick University’s horticulture research institute and they have to carry out two tests. I spoke to the guy there and he said the results should come through this week.

“I have registered it with the Guinness World Records so all I need to do is send them the certificate confirming it.

“I have had a look in the book for the worlds hottest sausage and there isn't one.

“One of my customers can eat raw chillis but even these sausages were too much for him.

“These ones are for the lads when they watch footy together and someone can sneak one on to their mate’s plate.”
