Burnley woman killed in crash on A56

A WOMAN was killed in a crash on the A56 this morning.

The collision occurred at Huncoat prior to Rising Bridge around 9.45am when a silver Mercedes coupe has been involved in a collision with a Mercedes sprinter van, a red mini cooper and white Ford transit pickup.

It is believed the Mercedes coupe was travelling along the southbound carriageway when it has lost control and veered onto the opposite carriageway colliding with the other vehicles which were heading north towards Burnley.

Sadly a 35-year-old woman from Burnley who was a passenger in the Mercedes car sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the Royal Blackburn Hospital a short time later.

The driver of the Mercedes, who is also from Burnley, is currently at the Royal Preston Hospital with serious leg injuries. His condition is described as critical.

A baby, who was in the rear of the Mercedes, sustained minor injuries and is being treated at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Five other people were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.
Police are investigating the circumstances of exactly what has happened.

Sergeant Malcolm Bell said: “I would appeal to anybody that witnessed this collision and has not yet spoken with police to please contact us.
