Burnley benefits cheat had a pension

A FORMER NHS worker was claiming benefits, but had not declared her occupational pension, a court heard.

Vivien Smith’s claim was a fraud from the start, and she was paid £3,297 she was not entitled to, over one year and four months, Burnley magistrates were told.

Smith, a carer for her 93-year-old mother, had been ‘somewhat overwhelmed’ by her responsibilities’ and was also struggling financially, it was said.

Smith, of Sycamore Avenue, Burnley, admitted making a false statement to obtain a benefit on, or about, June 3, 2010.

Smith was bailed until today, for a pre-sentence report.
