Boris the Morris Minor a major hit with Accrington dementia residents

A CARE home is hoping new addition ‘Boris the Morris’ will help residents with dementia.
The Morris Minor, set in a new sensory garden, was the idea of Lynn Maguire, lifestyle support co-ordinator, who was keen to help residents recapture their youth.
The car, at Springhill Care Home care centre in Accrington, was soon nicknamed Boris by staff and residents.
It is designed to encourage people with dementia to relive past memories and happy times from their lives.
It is now a permanent feature at the home and regularly used by the care centre’s lifestyle team.
The car, sourced by Springhill group chairman Ken Nolan, has now been installed in the care home’s new sensory garden.
With a woodland theme featuring trees, colourful foliage, gentle slopes and safe walkways, the garden is intended to aid relaxation and calm.
General manager Theresa Swan said: “Therapeutic, meaningful activity provides enormous benefits for residents with dementia at Springhill. As a result the sensory garden has been a great addition to the home, with residents benefiting from the relaxing atmosphere.
“Combined with the flowers and furniture the area really is a little secret garden for our residents, and as we had hoped, many of them can relate to Boris who has proved very popular.”
