Pendle MP calls for ‘speed up’ on new Nelson school

PENDLE MP Andrew Stephenson has put pressure on the Government to approve the compulsory purchase order to start building work on a new Whitefield School, in Nelson.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Stephenson, a governor at Whitefield Infant School, said a protracted planning process, with obscure objections from a number of unaccountable bodies, added more than £1 million to the cost of building the school and pushed back the building date to 2014 “at the absolute earliest”.

He said: “The objections have been overcome, but the compulsory purchase order for the site is now stuck with the national planning casework team in the Department for Communities and Local Government.”

He has asked the Secretary of State Eric Pickles to speed the process up so work can start.
