East Lancashire campaigners fight cuts to respiratory disease funding

LIVES will be put at risk because of cuts in funding for lung and respiratory disease, according to East Lancashire campaigners.

The Blackburn with Darwen Breathe Easy group is angry that the disease will not be given a Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) to support local care under the reformed NHS.

This sets it apart from disease areas like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, mental health, neurology, renal care and maternity services, all of which will be included in new networks.

Previously, the Regional Respiratory Programme Board had been set up with funding from the Department of Health to improve care for people with lung and respiratory disease, but this funding runs out in 2013.

Paul Riley, spokesperson for Blackburn with Darwen Breathe Easy group, said: “The SCNs formulate policy for the North West and tell local care providers the best way to improve.

“If we lose central government backing for this kind of body, there will be no guidance for local people.

“Lung and respiratory disease is a big problem in East Lancashire, and we currently have very good provision of services.

“I’m afraid if we lose the central funding then we will lose the initiative - we’ll get lost in the pipeline, and won’t have enough clout to improve the service.”

He added: “A lack of any such support could result in many deaths from lung cancer that could otherwise have been avoided.”

The Breathe Easy group has written to Blackburn and Darwen MPs Jack Straw and Jake Berry for help overturning the NHS Commissioning Body Authority (NHS CBA) decision.

A spokesperson for the commissioning body said: “Clinicians assessed a broad range of conditions against criteria developed with stakeholders to establish whether a strategic clinical network would be the best way to improve outcomes.

“The NHS CBA has made it clear that, as priorities change or the work of one of the initial strategic clinical networks concludes, the board will identify new conditions or patient groups that would benefit from a strategic clinical network approach.”

You ignorant tits like you, are what screw this country over. You do realise that a lot of respiratory disease's aren't just cause by smokers. There are many difference diseases that are not. You're obviously just an idiot that either has no idea or are just too stupid to pay attention.

That could be applied to all areas of medical treatment.

Lets cut funding for alcohol related treatments and instead of gastric bands for fat **** stitch their mouths shut!

Or even better, stop the NHS being the worlds hospital, ban foreigners(health tourists) from coming here for treatment without paying, and there would be enough to go round for people that actually pay for the NHS!

Would you buy a car and then sit back and let everyone else drive it while you walk everywhere?

It could indeed.

We most definitely should cut funding for ALL self-inflicted illnesses which are a result of over-indulgence in things known to be bad for you.

'Health tourism' is the least of anyone's worries since it is probably the least significant of the many drains on the resources plaguing the NHS.

I can't fathom out what you mean with the car analogy.

This is the type of attitude that most bedevils the NHS. As it's my job, of course I know that SOME respiratory diseases (not disease's) are not caused by smoking but the vast majority are. Everyone who smokes knows full well the damage they are doing and regard the NHS as the safety net that will entitle them to carry on their vile habit. And that's why, if you'd bothered to pay attention, I wrote that self-induced illnesses should not be expected to be treated. They certainly shouldn't be treated to the extent they are now.

That's too ridiculous for words. A prime example of Godwin's Law; when you can't think of a way to win an argument, denigrate the other side by comparing him with Hitler!

It's blatantly obvious that the people who abuse their own bodies and then get upset because the NHS can't fix what they brought on themselves is the biggest drain on the organisation that has ever existed. When people ignore health information telling them what will happen when they partake in damaging practices, they are abusing the money the NHS is forced to spend on those campaigns.

I think you should definitely keep your ignorant and very selfish views to yourself as they are damaging. Find a life.

Who uses the NHS that has never paid for it? Does that mean any dole-ite must be denied treatment? And who is it that complains 'there isn't enough left in the pot'? It's not the size of the pot that's the problem here, it's the distribution of the funds. Everyone claims their speciality is more important than someone else's.

Since it is widely known that there is a finite amount of money available, those with self-inflicted illnesses have to be bottom of the pile. After all, a simple modification of their indulgences would be better for them than a costly operation or course of medication. An ounce of prevention and all that.

I am shocked not only at your naive attitude to those affected by lung disease but the fact that you suggest that you work within the NHS is causing me great concern. People like you who cannot see passed their own shoe size ought not be in such positions as care as you obviously haven't a caring bone in your body. For your information many factors cause respiratory disease, including the aftershave you are possibly wearing right now and the fuel used to feed your face, warm your house and power the vehicle you travel to work in every day. Infact your transportation emissions over the passed two years has probably caused more lung disease to wider number of people than a lifetime of cigarette smoking from one person. If you bother to research yourself you will most likely discov that many people are actually born with the genetic form Alpha-1. Copd is the 4th killer in the World and not all sufferers are smoker and not all smokers suffer from Copd. Vehicular emissions, Industrial Air Pollution including Industrial Disease caused by irresponsible employers and lack of health and safety have a massive part to play. Children including horses suffer from COPD.....do they smoke? The list of causetives are increasing every year, even drinking soda has been identified as one. Hormones being another! Other Genetic links may yet be identified. To remove treatments or funding for preventative measures from such an important part of Health and Social Care would be a major disaster. This disease is if I remember rightly is set to be the 2nd Killer Worldwide by 2030.
