Winners announced in Lancashire tourism awards

A TIRELESS tour guide and storyteller, a country pub and a luxury hotel were winners in the Lancashire Tourism Awards.

Simon Entwistle was given a special recognition award for helping to establish the county’s dark tourism product, with his ghost and heritage tours across East Lancashire.

This year especially, he has worked to raise the profile of the 400th Anniversary of the Pendle Witch Trials, which has generated substantial media attention.

Simon was presented with his accolade by the chairman of the tourism board, chef Paul Heathcote .

The other winners were The Millstone at Mellor, which was given the title of the county’s Tourism Pub of the Year and Northcote , Langho, which won Small Hotel of the Year.

Mr Entwistle said: “It’s certainly a very pleasant surprise to win this award and very unexpected.

“I do feel very honoured, due to the excellent candidates in my category.

“Michael Ranson, leader of Ribble Valley council, was the first person to congratulate me with a warm handshake.

“That did mean a lot to me, as I am very proud of the area and the many tours I conduct.”

Anson Bolton, who runs The Millstone at Mellor with wife Sarah, said he believed the reason for his award was the pub being ‘the hub of the village’.

He said: “It’s a real honour for the staff here. We try to be an organic part of the village with many events such as the Jubilee street party and other events which bring the community together.”

The event was held at the Guild Hall, Preston, the first organised by Marketing Lancashire, the new company promoting the county as a great place to visit and invest in.

The evening, which saw 16 trophies handed to a range of businesses across the county, was hosted by designer, Wayne Hemingway.

Another East Lancashire successes included Hackings Caravan Park, Clitheroe, which was highly commended.

A very well done to them all, just goes to show a little hard work makes the difference between success and an also ran, I am glad that Blackburn has nothing to do with the Ribble Valley otherwise nothing would be won in this neck of the woods and nothing to come here for.

The Ribble Valley is just a 1974 construct - cobbled together from Blackburn, Burnley and Preston Rural Districts, Clitheroe and the Western fringe of the West Riding. People from Mellor used to say they lived in Blackburn.

Bit harsh on Blackburn, these were the Lancashire tourism awards and the last time I checked Blackburn was in Lancashire. It ain't no oil painting but it has a heritage and helped the UK paint half the globe pink some years ago (cotton industry) and you should respect it for that. As someone who was born at Bull Hill (Darwen), schooled in Blackburn whilst living in Ribble Valley I have a bit of experience of the whole area and I really think you should just be grateful that you don't live in Burnley.
