Clarets kits a massive hit with Ugandan kids
THE FAMOUS claret and blue jerseys of Burnley FC are being proudly worn by hundreds of African footballers thanks to the help of two primary school headteachers.
Julie Bradley and Dawn Forshaw, respectively the heads at Padiham St Leonard’s and Wellfield Methodist and Anglican Church School, Burnley, are currently on a visit to Uganda.
During the trip they are working with schools in the north of the country to develop their curriculum for pupils in an attempt to improve the youngsters’ skills, school attendance and attainment.
Julie and Dawn were invited on the trip by the Future’s Learning Trust as a result of the work that their schools did setting up pop up farms.
The two teachers are also trustees of the football club’s community scheme and have been helping distribute more than 200 replica team shirts of all sizes, donated by the Clarets .
Describing one of the pictures, showing dozens of footballers in the jerseys, Julie said: “They have little food and they walk 10 kilometres to school each day and many have no parents.
“But they wear their Burnley shirts with pride.”
Another photograph shows a junior team preparing for an inter-village tournament in the kit.
Jonathan Sibley, chief executive of Burnley FC’s community scheme, said: “We’ve sent hundreds of shirts from the smallest size available to ones suitable for adults and it’s great to see the pictures from Julie and Dawn showing what good use they are being put to.
“They have gone to adult and junior teams and to a girls’ school who all keep in touch with the club and tell us of their progress.
“The club is proud to be involved and are looking to do more similar work.” Speaking before she left for the African country, Dawn said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am very grateful to the governing body for allowing me to take part in the project.
“I will be setting up links with schools out in Uganda so that the children from Wellfield School have opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of global citizenship issues.”

Good work by Burnley FC and these teachers. Anything that puts a smile on these poor kids faces should be good news to most people. Just because there's nothing to smile about down the road with the Venky's keeping letting the bitterness come out and sink to even lower depths.

They were expecting Aston Villa shirts then one of them worked out they were not Aston Villa shirts but they were Burnley shirts. Hence the picture of them looking totally underwhelmed!
