Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School to become academy

ONE of East Lancashire’s top schools has confirmed it is to convert into an academy, despite teachers staging a walk-out over the plans earlier this summer.

The controversial move from Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School will mean that from next month it will become an independent academy.

In a letter to parents, headmaster Alan Porteous and chairman of governors David King stated that the transfer ‘would not alter the nature or ethos of the school’.

The governors said the move gave them greater control of its budget and a chance to diversify its curriculum. Despite the change from foundation school, the school’s name would remain the same.

Academy plans have been controversial across the county, with the government demanding failing schools be converted.

A successful campaign was launched in Nelson to halt Walverden Primary School from becoming an academy. The BRGS letter said: “Conversion to academy status is the best option for safeguarding the ethos, the quality of provision and the high standards of the school.

“The organisation and running of the school will see little change on a daily basis.”

But Lancashire NUT secretary Sam Ud-din said he had met with school and union representatives to express their dismay.

He said: “There are new arrivals at the school who only joined last year and they were not warned of the plans to become an academy.”

John Girdley, Lancashire representative for the NASUWT, said his members had a feeling of ‘resignation’.

This is really bad news for this previously fantastic school. So how much will the new headmaster be getting for his new salary with this venture? Is there going to be the usual fie-year re-union next year then? Are the old fellows from the school being notified of the change? Probably not. RIP BRGS.

Oh dear, the school will get to control it's own budget and the council will no longer be able to syphon it off and the Unions will lose a bit of their control.

As to reunions and Old Fellows, surely the Statement that:-

“The organisation and running of the school will see little change on a daily basis.”

Will cover that. Or do you think the Headmaster is as truthful as a Politician or Union Leader.

No doubt the extra money will be used to give Headmaster Alan Porteous a suitable pay rise in order to reflect his status as a business leader of great importance. Maybe the next step for Chair of Govenors David King should be to increase further the 50% of pupils who do not even live in Rossendale, this will be quiet easy and not even require sham consultation as the system for working out entrance scores are flexible, not open to question and they refuse to tell anyone what they are! Quiet clearly Mr King believes Rossendale children are bred to either make slippers or have a destiny of benifit's, thus it is quiet pointless to waste a good grammar education on them when there are nicer people further afield who are willing to attend who might not wish to have a slipper career paid at minimum wage. If Mr King feels the school is short of money why not dip into the 300k held in the BRGS trust account which seemed to just stay their. He really needs to be sacked to allow someone who really cares about the future of Rossendale's children to be Chair.
