Gates to be installed to cut crime in Burnley back alleys

GATES blocking off the back alleys of several Burnley streets are to be installed to try and reduce anti-social behaviour.

Two metre high gates will be erected in Wynotham Street, Briercliffe Road, Brennand Street, Colne Road and Tenis Street.

A Burnley Council spokesman said: “Residents of Burnley who are feeling vulnerable and targeted by crime have applied to Burnley Borough Council to have gates fitted to the rear of their properties.

"This measure will help to reduce crime and fear of crime. The crime figures and anti-social behaviour figures have been monitored for two years and the area were shown to have consistently high crime.”

The crime figures will now continue to be monitored for the next year.

2 meter high gates are not going to stop many young hooligans but cameras might do, and surely they would be cheaper in the long run.

Gates won't do diddly squat, it's all psychological, same as door locks un bolts etc. How about giving all the residents a shot gun and train them how to use it ? I had to chuckle at 'the crime figures had been monitored for two years HaHa ... Two years to get a few gates up lol... Way things are goin folk are gonna need more than gates !

We had gates at one point....the local 'youths' damaged the locks so the repair idea (this is the mentality of officialdom) was to remove the gates.

I will give them 6 months and then they won't be bothered to close them.
pendle council installed gates and eventually took them down becuase the people who demanded them were too lazy to open and shut them!!!!

I think taser would be a better deterrent. I think each resident should be issued with their own unit. Just go out to have a quiet word and ZZZZsssstttt, oh look he's wet himself, do you think it will dry out if I do it again ZZZsssstttt. No maybe not.
