MP Jack Straw to complain to BBC over Blackburn estate's documentary portrayal
10:33am Wednesday 12th September 2012 in News
By Bill Jacobs, Local government reporter
MP Jack Straw has vowed to complain to the BBC over its portrayal of Blackburn's Shadworth estate
BLACKBURN MP Jack Straw is to complain to BBC governors over last night’s Panorama film which portrayed Shadsworth as if it was “an uncharted part of Africa”.
He is furious that the docum-entary sensationalised the estate’s problems, and ignored progress in recent years.
Having seen the actual film last night, he rejected BBC claims it was a fair portrayal of life on ‘Shad’.
Mr Straw echoed comments made by community leaders that ‘Trouble on the Estate’ depicted Shadsworth as a crime and drug-ridden community similar to Chatsworth in TV’s “Shameless”.
He said last night: “I shall be writing a strongly-worded complaint to the BBC Trust about this film. It is unacceptable to send a reporter from London who then treats Shadsworth like a Victorian explorer in an uncharted part of Africa.
“The estate does have problems, but so do many others everywhere else in Britain. They viewed Shadsworth through the eyes of a handful of well-known dysfunctional families and implied everybody on the estate shares that outlook.
“The few positives mentioned were simply fig-leaves.
“The film badly misrepresented the lifestyles of the great majority on the estate, and sought to sensationalise its problems.
“I have spent 33 years as its MP, and know the area extremely well.
“It went through serious problems in the 80s and early 90s – just as many similar areas did when much of manufacturing collapsed.
“But the area has improved significantly since then.
“As for ‘drugs, anti-social behaviour, family break-ups, and joblessness’ – such circumstances are not confined to classic estates.
“But these days there is overall much better social behaviour, and significantly less crime.
A Panorama spokesman maintained the film was fair, and rejected claims that residents had been encouraged to behave badly.
He said: “It is categorically untrue that the programme team sought to influence the behaviour of anyone they filmed, and certainly didn’t ask them to put up hoods, as is evident from the youngsters featured in the film.
“We didn’t edit out anybody on the basis that they worked.
“Indeed, working people are featured in the film, and we never interviewed anyone who identified themselves to us as a nurse. ”

He'd be better of complaining to the lacklustre police, the overly lenient courts and the benefits minister.
If only Labour could have a few terms in power to sort this mess out...oh, hang on, they did.

What the programme did was highlight what the nation has been saying for years...overpaying benefits to people like Alwyn Page is ruining society & people like Jack Straw & Co are condoning it!
There wasn't one truly valid reason for her to be paid £1100 per month (an average salary for most) in benefits so she can sit at home smoking drugs, drinking (even her son complained about the amount of wine she put in that disgusting slop she referred to as 'tea') & then moaning about having to go to the job centre...apparently she was upset by that inconvenience! She, like hundreds of thousands of other up & down the country, is lazy & job shy...MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEIR OWN DRINK & DRUGS BY MAKING THEM GET JOBS & STOP MAKING US HARD WORKING FOLK PAY TOWARDS IT!
Add to this never ending pot of money for scumbags, the cost of all the social services etc needed to support them, the policing, NHS etc...politicians are draining the country's finances on people who simply don't deserve it...and clearly don't need as much as they get.

I watched the documentary and it didn't disappoint. Lots of trackie bottoms, blue tattoos and the occasional glimpse of Tyson the dog. Coupled with the mini moto's
Olwyns classic line, I can't get up for a job because I'm on medication to get me to sleep. Needs uppers during the day to get motivated after smoking weed, then can't sleep so takes some downers so can't get up the day after. Its a female Michael Jackson. Get up, at the bus stop, don't stop till you get enough. OOOOooooowww. Chamoine.
Brilliant who writes this script.
Hey Olwyn, I'll let you in on it. If you stopped smoking weed, you wouldn't need the uppers. Then as you don't need the uppers, you wouldn't need the downers afterwards, so that would make you able to get yer lazy arse out to work. Felt sorry for the kids.
Would have been better suited putting the Youth Zone in the middle of shad instead of the middle of town. Maybe they can build another one instead of wasting money on orbital routes and bus lanes.

However you want to dress it up, by any measure Shad has had a much higher than average proportion of layabout adults and delinquent kids than anywhere else in the town (and most other places in the country for that matter).
Jack Straw and the Council are more than aware of this - the national statistics are backed up by the council's own internal stats and budgetary figures, in which Shad tops nearly all the league tables for dysfunction.
Rather than trying to spin their way out of it, a bit of honesty would be nice - there can be little doubt that they're TRYING to improve the place.
If Shadsworth is the fantastic, inclusive, caring community that Mr Straw, the Council management and senior Police have spent the last 24 hours desperately trying to portray, can they please explain why it deserves to be in receipt of so much more local and national funding than anywhere else, and why none of them live there?

The TV documentary may not have done Blackburn any favours, but neither did some of the comments from people used for the show.
Bottle of wine visible, cigarette in hand, and depressed? Financial help for carpets and decorating and depressed? Income from benefits and depressed?
There are many needy people in this country at this time, and for genuine people, the financial aid is a necessity which I do not begrudge, but seeing people lounging in the chair, receiving benefits and all that comes with it begs the question - why should I bother working when I could possibly stay at home with a glass of wine and a cigarette and benefits rolling in?
Makes you think.....

Jack Straw has been voted in consistently for the last 33 years and Shadsworth is just the tip of the iceburg when you walk around Blackburn and Darwen. Shad, Green Lane, Higher Croft, Livesey, Audley, Whalley Range, Corporation Park, Queens Park etc etc can all demonstrate that something has gone wrong. Seriously wrong. The people of Blackburn have voted this man in to ensure it is developed in the best way for its occupants and he has had 33 years to put his mark on the town.
It's no use writing strongly worded letters now, Jack. This is the town you have created. This is the country you have helped create.
Did you vote for Jack? Are you happy with how the town is? Was it better before Jack lifetimes work?

Shad, Blackburn, it's not even in the same league of crime to Leeds, Liverpool, East Manchester, Nottingham or especially London.
This TV was just easy pickings, no trouble to film. Can you imagine if this had been done on Liverpool? Aired the week that the lies of the media in the 1980's are exposed?
My second point is this program have had another aganda? There seems to be hysteria brewing over the lazy jobless wasting our taxes. Every day new stories about benefits abuse, highlighting the wrong doing.
5 years ago, we knew about it going on but it wasn't so hotly debated, when are we all so interested now?
This is all part of the plan to get us onside when more cuts come along

People from a generation of families who were brought up in a benefit culture, who know no other way to live and who have never and will never contribute anything to society.
The benefit system encouraged by the Thatcher government and continued by subsequent governments is to blame for allowing these misfits in society to continue in this vane.

The measure most commonly used is Indices of Multiple Deprivation looks at a whole host of data including income, employment, educational attainment & crime.
What makes Shad 'easy pickings' - surely it would have been easier for the BBC to visit somewhere on their doorstep such as London or Salford - backwater towns like Blackburn are usually too much of trek.
Maybe the sudden focus on 'scroungers' is because so many working people are now suddenly hoping to rely on the welfare-state safety-net they've been contributing to for years only finding it's tattered and frayed after decades of abuse by these scroungers.

He is not responsible for people quite content to reap in all the benefits available which keeps them in wine and cigarettes. It is the system which is wrong. One person included in the programme claimed depression. This might gives others an idea - Go to the GP, get some anti-depressant medication and then sit back and collect the benefits, free carpets, free home decor and probably much more. Wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't a free holiday thrown in as well.
The people who have pride, and go out to work must fume when they see people who sit on their backsides and claim everything going. The more kids, the more benefit. Makes me furious that I have worked all my life, have not/do not claim any benefit at all, and then whilst watching a documentary on an area in my home town, I see how the other half lives. I ask myself one question - 'What kind of fool am I?'

I grew up in Highercroft in the 80s, council estates were pretty much the same then as they are now. Full of lazy workshy scumbags.
Meanwhile the said MPs, who made all the promises to us, become (if they weren't already) millionaires on the back of their massive salaries, expenses and outside earnings.
No wonder during the recent riots a sizeable proportion of those on the streets were they who we would normally describe as decent.

i) The Man of Straw is bound to speak of his outrage as would MPs of any other town would so so if a documentary of this nature was shown about their constituency
2) Shadsworth and its residents are no different from any broad brush sample taken from estates the length and breadth of the UK. As the same can be said about High Street shops.
3) As one comment said "There will always be people of the worst. examples shown who will milk the system" This is true and has been so for the 70 years I have been on this planet.
4) Politicians be they MPs or Councillors have always made mistakes, more often than not not in touch on a daily basis with their Constituencies or Wards. This leaves them open to (quite often) pursue their own self righteous, self advancement ideas. More so making them toeing "The Party Line"
5) Defining where finance investment, practical planning and solutions seem to be as a result of (4) and never moreso in this PC age.
6) Shadsworth has suffered in the same way as many estates in many towns suffering a similar fate as e.g. estates in Burnley where millions were constantly being channelled and wasted into Stoneyholme where it was perceived that the Asian Community was being given priority. One of the "kept under the carpet" reasons for the riots which also took place in Oldham and others.
7) As long as politicians continue to follow the Blairite/Brown diktat to ruin Traditional Britain and the current incumbents keep following the same bent of multiculturism then places such as Shadsworth will continue to fester.
8) As long as weak willed politicians, Judges, self aggrandaisers and do-gooders continue to have the greatest pressure on our lives then people like the awful woman and her family will always continue to exist.
9) What needs to happen is efficiency in how benefits are distributed and of course the amounts. Practical and down to earth hands on help, proper jjobs with pay that is more beneficial than benefits and reduced taxation to encourage people to work
10) LASTLY; documentaries such as this would not get past any broadcasters benchmarks unless it contains some form of sensationalism. They use the rule that good news is boring and doesn't sell newspapers or programmes. In all fairness the voice over at the end stated that Shadsworth is typical of so many estates across the country.

Also: can be defined as being A person who continually sponges off others, either friends, family or the state.
QUESTION: What have Politicians ever done? created work - NO. Created Wars, unemployment, unbalanced societies and worst of all WARS. We all know who created war in Iraq and Afghanistan for our brave soldiers and funded by those who EARN and PAY TAXES and we all know who helped.

I object strongly to paying taxes to either .

Jack Straw is , well , polite words fail me . I have also similar feelings about
Barbara Castle .
Many , many years ago , when life was hard , and I lost my job when the company for whom I worked was taken over , I took the only job I could find .
I became a bus driver .
I have a lot of respect for bus drivers accordingly .
WOW - the worst route was Penny St to Shad and back .
Horrible in the morning (school kids -also known as "shad-rats") .
Ok during the day - when decent people got on . There were some lovely OAPs - really grateful for the bus .
Spectacularly bad at night .
Violent drunks coming back from Blackburn .
Prozzies going to Blackburn .
Quite a few drivers refused to go on that route .
Luckily those days are over .
For me .
What's the situation nowadays ?

Shame: that there are people living in such self-induced squalor, not in Africa, Jack, but on our doorstep.
Sadness: this will continue to deteriorate as there is no easy solution. Shad is not alone, there are similar areas throughout the country. Bit of a contrast to all the back-slapping of the Olympics!
Anger: parents who cannot and will not control their children. What do we expect when children are not taught right from wrong and see parents with no work ethic? We seriously need to consider conscription for people reaching 18 who are out of school and out of work.

, Inviting TV crews into my badly decorated home, Blighting my childrens lives, etc etc
No wonder the poor woman can't hold down a job, She is just far too busy for any of that malarkey!

You may have misunderstood my post .
Maybe I did not express myself correctly .
I am anything but a burnt out bus driver .
(Though I have to say I am delighted I no longer drive a bus!) .
I pay a lot of tax .
I object to paying said tax for those who have never contributed . Hmmm sounds like scroungers and bankers again .
Not to worry .

dont get me wrong its not only on the Shadsworth estate, but all inner Cities, these people are lazy arragont and work shy, What the Government need to do is stop all benefits to immigrants, until they have 2 years worth of stamps on their cards, make all benefit claimants work for their benefit, ie, street cleaning road repairs, cleaning the sides of main roads, get them out of their comfort zone, and if they wont get off there arses, dont pay them.
