INSPECTION CONCERNS Lumb Valley Care Home, in Rossendale
A CARE home for the elderly has been ordered to make urgent improvements – or be shut down.
An inspection at Lumb Valley Care Home, in Rossendale, identified a number of concerns.
Lack of staff training was the main issue raised by The Care Quality Commission (CQC) when it reviewed the Burnley Road East premises on July 9.
But Waqar Hussain, who runs the private care home accommodating 15 people, has defended his company, and said the company does comply with the CQC.
The concerns included:
- Insufficient staff members on night duty
- Issues with moving, and handling, procedures
- Staffing levels
- Training and induction
- Formal staff supervision was not always being carried out on a regular basis.
The CQC will carry out another inspection, to check progress, in the near future.
A spokesman said: “The law sets out national standards that everyone who uses services should be able to expect.
“Providers have a duty to ensure they meet these standards. This warning sends a clear, and public, message that Mr Waqar Hussain needs to address these issues as a matter of urgency, or face serious consequences.”
Mr Hussain said: “We are a very good service and I disagree with what the inspector has said.
“Our staff are given 12 weeks training before they start work, and there are plenty of workers.
“After their visit we were completely shocked.
“We do everything by the book, and the care that the residents get is very good.
“We will do everything that we can to ensure staff and residents are being cared for properly. They are targeting the wrong people.”

I'd like to know if inspectors turn up unannounced or if notice is given to the homes. If notice is given then obviously some care homes will "get their house" in order prior to the visit and then perhaps lapse back into their old ways once they have left. Inspections need to be unannounced if any worth is to be placed in their findings.
