Hyndburn MP calls for end to glassing horror

AN MP is urging a ban on glasses in pubs and nightspots to make a night out on the town safer for revellers.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones said it would be cheaper for the government to help fund plastic glasses in bars and clubs, than to deal with violent glassing incidents.

Mr Jones is among MPs backing a Bill which would require nightclubs to ban glass. The MP is also raising awareness of an eight-month glass-free scheme which ran in Hyndburn in 2010, when 20 pubs and clubs were using the polyc-arbonate glasses. During this period there were no glass-related assaults or incidents.

Mr Jones said the plan would also end the sort of glassing injuries suffered by Mark Steer in Accrington Town Centre in 2010.

Mr Steer was left almost half-blinded, suffered an extensive perforation to his right eye and had two operations on his eye when he was glassed in the face.

Mr Jones said: “It’s absolutely deva-stating when things like that happen to people. You don’t expect a night out to ruin the rest of your life.

“Anti-social violence as a result of alcohol is still a big problem in Hynd-burn – as it is in most of the country. However, a change however small, from glass to plastic in nightclubs could make a big difference.

“Lancashire Constabulary also piloted a scheme with night clubs across the county that were averaging as high as 17 glassings a year.”

Mr Jones said a Home Office Report estimated that an alcohol-related glass-ing incident can cost up to £180,000 to treat, andinvolving up to 48 different professionals.

Why don't they just give all the binge drinking numpties a sippy cup to drink their lager, after all, if they want to act like children then treat them like children.

Here's a radical idea.
If it's become unsafe safe to go out and drink from glass in case some clown carves you a new face, then why don't we lock these idiots up and throw the key away.

I started drinking in the late 70's and you could get completely bladdered and know you would be safe, some one would help you get home. Times where very different then than they are today. The main reason is the lack of a deterrent, as far as I am concerned anyone who does this should be doing 20 years in jail. Until we have these deterrents things will only get worse.

I thought the current trend was to sell bottles of beer as the numpty drinkers can be charged double the draft price for their Dutch courage? Swilling pints of draught seems to be the reserve of the older end who can hold their liquor and don't need a fight to end their evening out.

We have licencing rules. The numpties can't legally buy a drink when they are already drunk.

Instead of forcing the quiet boozer to use terrible plastic pints why not police the places that allow the idiots to cause trouble. Use the rules that already exist instead of making more up.

Have these MP,s no idea about how cra p a pint taste out of a plastic glass ????

I doubt there are that many incidents to warrant this and will plastic glasses prevent the knives being used instead ?

Why is it MP,s are cluless about the people that drink in pubs and if someone is set on doing someone harm they will do it with anything.

Shall be ban stools and chair legs etc ????
If we're going to ban other stuff, blue tattoos get my vote, as well as trackie bottoms, bling and dogs called tyson.
Oh and sausage rolls being sold before 11am at greggs.Sod it, sausage rolls being sold to mums with pushchairs should be punishable by benefits being stopped, that should clean the town up a bit. Someone should swing

Its simple, anybody who glasses another person or stamps on someones head when they're on the floor or uses their head like a football when they are out cold and unable to defend themselves should be convicted of attempted murder and sentenced accordingly.

What a stupid remark, If some one commits murder what do we do give them a community service order as it was only their first offence.
