Diabetes roadshow referrals

HALF of the people tested for diabetes at a Burnley roadshow have been referred to a GP.

Almost 300 people attended the Diabetes UK’s Healthy Lifestyle Roadshow in Burnley on September 4 and 5, which was aimed at reaching people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes within the next decade.

Of those tested, 148 were referred to their GP for further advice or tests as their risk of diabetes was moderate to high.

The roadshow also offered advice on how to make beneficial lifestyle changes by adopting a healthy diet low in fat, salt and sugar and taking regular physical activity.

There are an estimated 7,800 people across East Lancashire who have Type 2 diabetes but who are not aware of it. If left untreated, the condition can lead to complications like stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and blindness.
