Tour East Lancashire scenery during Walk and Ride Festival

SEVERAL chances are being offered to tour some unforgettable parts of the Pennines as part of a walking and riding festival.

Landmarks around the South Pennines, between East Lancashire and West Yorkshire, will be brought into focus between now and September 23.

And promoters of the South Pennine Walk and Ride Festival will also be taking a detour west to showcase the sights and sounds of Darwen’s hill country.

An 18-mile cycle tour sets off from Tockholes Visitors Centre on Sunday, September 23, taking in Darwen Tour.

Further festival highlights will include an outing to Burnley’s Singing Ringing Tree, setting off from Towneley Hall on Saturday, September 22.

Mark Turner, of festival organisers Pennine Prospects, said: “This is our fifth Walk and Ride Festival and every year they just get bigger and better.

“This year we have even more activities and events so people can check out the website to see what’s happening near them.”

Today Mike Denton will lead a search for the elusive Pennine finch, or twite, on moorland above Walsden, near Todmorden.

And tomorrow a walk will set off along the Todmorden Centenary Way.

This Friday will see horse riders venture from Peers Clough Farm to the Hargreaves Arms in Lumb, near Waterfoot, and a similar all-day ride sets off from the Ram Inn, Cliviger, the following day.

Walkers will be looking for the source of the River Calder, in the hills above Portsmouth, near Todmorden, on September 18.
