Minister pledges progress on rebuilding of Nelson school
2:40pm Monday 10th September 2012 in News
A PLEDGE has been secured from Communities Secretary Eric Pickles to make progress on the rebuilding of a Nelson school.
Staff and pupils at Whitefield Infants have faced a three-year wait for replacement premises and have faced a series of hurdles, mostly from heritage organisations.
And it was thought that progress on the Norfolk Street project could now proceed unhindered.
But Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson is concerned that the compulsory purchase order process for various properties, required for the scheme, is dragging on.
In a House of Commons debate he asked if Mr Pickles was prepared to meet him to discuss the proposals as a matter or urgency.
Mr Pickles said: “I understand that my honourable friend wasted no time in lobbying the new Planning Minister on the subject, and there are officials...who will have heard his question.
“On my return to the office, I will be expecting an explanation.”
